What is Sports Massage?

Monday, January 10th, 2011

Sports MassageSports Massage is a special form of massage and is typically used before, during, and after athletic events. The massage was originally developed to help athletes prepare their bodies for optimal performance, recover after a big event, or function well during training. Sports massage emphasizes prevention and healing of injuries to the muscles and tendons.

Sports massage is a type of deep tissue massage that stimulates circulation of blood and lymph fluids. Some sports massage movements use trigger point therapy to break down adhesions, or trigger points (knots) in the muscles, and increase range of motion.

You don’t have to be an Olympic athlete to benefit from sports massage, weekend warriors can benefit as well. It is also good for people with injuries, chronic pain or restricted range of motion. The massage therapist generally concentrates on a specific problem area, depending on the sport. (more…)

Water: Do you get enough?

Tuesday, September 7th, 2010

Water is your body’s largest component and makes up about 60 percent of your body weight. Every system in your body depends on water. For example, water flushes toxins out of vital organs, carries nutrients to your cells and provides a moist environment for ear, nose and throat tissues. Lack of water can lead to dehydration, a condition that occurs when you don’t have enough water in your body to carry out normal functions. Even mild dehydration can drain your energy and make you tired. Everyone knows we need water to survive. We even understand how good it is for us, but the reason is a little fuzzy.

Last week Dr. Viehbeck visited with the Allen Tallenettes about the importance of drinking water.  During his discussion, Dr. Viehbeck said everyone should be drinking half their body weight in ounces of water each day. Of course every person is different and requires a unique balance but said this is a good rule of thumb. Another tip he gave the dancers is to drink water throughout the day. Just drinking water at night or with dinner is not sufficient. Lastly, he said once you are thirsty you are already dehydrated. Just drinking water when you are thirsty is not enough. Your body needs waters for so many reasons. (more…)

Do you know what’s in your shampoo?

Wednesday, July 14th, 2010

Toxins can be hidden in your shampoo! Most people use shampoo at least a few times a week. But do you know what’s actually in it? A list of shampoo ingredients from the website Good may give you something to think about when choosing your next one:

Surfactants — Surfactants are necessary for the lathering, cleaning, and degreasing effects of a shampoo.  Conventional surfactants such as sodium lauryl or laureth sulfate, ammonium laureth sulfate, cocamide DEA, and ammonium xylene sulfonate have the potential for harshness, stripping away fatty acids. Natural surfactants such as decyl glucoside, sucrose cocoate, sodium methyl cocoyl taurate, and sodium lauroamphoacetate may not foam like a conventional product, but your hair will still be just as clean. How To Wean Yourself Off Processed Foods in 7 Steps

Wednesday, June 16th, 2010

Fake MeatReal Food Has Curves, a new book written by Bruce Weinstein and Mark Scarbrough, offers a 7-step plan for weaning yourself off processed foods:

  1. Seek true satisfaction. Enjoy genuine flavors, rather than fat, sugar, and salt added to mask the metallic taste of chemical additives.
  2. Read labels wisely. You can find food with “real” ingredients in the supermarket if you read labels carefully.
  3. Relish what’s on your plate. Devote time solely to enjoying the pleasures of eating.
  4. Wean yourself off excess salt, fat, and sugar. You can also cook with smaller amounts of these ingredients by using natural substitutes like strong spices.
  5. Give your palate time to change. You’ll gradually lose your taste for excessively sweet and salty foods.
  6. Go for high-quality foods. Look for products that contain the least amount of processed ingredients.
  7. Treat yourself well by not skipping meals. Try eating three meals a day at fairly regular times, plus a mid-afternoon snack.

You asked, we answer! 21 Day Purification Q & A

Monday, May 17th, 2010

We are now on Day 17 of our cleanse and loving every minute of it!  Throughout the past 17 days we have been asked lots of great questions and would like to share the answers with you!

“WHAT IS THE PURPOSE OF A DETOX OR CLEANSE PROGRAM?”

A purification program (also know as detox or cleanse) can help you remove natural toxins from your body and help maintain a healthy body weight. Although our bodies are designed to rid themselves naturally of these toxins, it can become overburdened and result in sickness, diseases, cancer, and less severe symptoms such as stuffy head, fatigue, difficulty sleeping, digestion issues, food cravings, weight gain, reduced mental clarity and low libido.

“WILL I LOSE WEIGHT ON THE PROGRAM?”

This depends on how close you are to a healthy body weight. If weight loss is appropriate for your body, most people can expect to lose an average of 10 pounds.  The ideal weight management system is not a quick fix,-instead it is a long term commitment and this program will help you learn to make healthy choices become a habit and a way of life.
