September 24, 2010
Many people get a massage because it feels fantastic and helps you relax. Did you know it can have other positive benefits? According to an article published in The New York Times a single session of massage causes biological changes. The Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles recruited adults to receive either a 45-minute session of deep-tissue Swedish massage or a light massage. Participants in the study who received a Swedish massage experienced significant decreases in levels of the stress hormone, cortisol. They also had increase in the number of lymphocytes, which blood cells that are a part of the immune system. Volunteers who received a light massage experienced greater increases in oxytocin, a hormone associated with contentment, than those who receive a Swedish massage, and bigger decreases in adrenal corticotropin hormone, which stimulates the adrenal glands to release cortisol.
